BEAUTY HISTORY OF INDIANAPOLIS

In 1910, Indianapolis business woman, Madam C.J. Walker, founded the now-legendary line of hair care products and cosmetics for African-American women. The business’ former headquarters, located on Indiana Avenue, employed 3,000 women and had a hair salon, manufacturing facility, and cultural center. Her great-great-granddaughter has recently partnered with Sephora to re-release a line of hair care products.

Over the years, Indiana has produced legendary style icons that have shaped fashion trends. For example, Norman Norell’s work from the ’40s through the ’60s had earned him the name “father of American high-fashion.” In the ’60s and ’70s, Roy Halston Frowick designed for many celebrities including creating the iconic pillbox hat that Jackie Kennedy wore to the inauguration. Then, in the ’80s, Stephen Sprouse’s punk couture defined the look of Billy Idol and more.

More recently, Indianapolis hairstylist Doja Freeman used Instagram to reach out to Hollywood A-listers, and now flies to LA every few months to bring some Indiana style to the west coast.

BEAUTY EVENTS IN INDIANAPOLIS

The fashion industry in Indianapolis is strong, integrating areas of clothing, hair, makeup, and style. In April, Indianapolis Fashion Week is a chance for those in the beauty industry to attend runway shows, meet Indiana-based professionals, and connect with industry leaders and editors.

Pattern Magazine has the pulse on Indianapolis style. The magazine hosts meetups, launch parties, and trade shows throughout the year, bringing the community together to discuss photoshoots, style trends, and more.
