Beauty History of Peoria
In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Peoria resident, Annie Malone, developed a hair-straightening chemical for African Americans that wouldn’t damage the hair or the scalp. Even though she didn’t stay in Peoria, she would go on to become the first black female millionaire through the sale of her hair care products.
Today, Peoria Magazine is the local voice for beauty trends, including cosmetics and hairstyles. The publication showcases not only the style trends of the Midwest but also what beauty trends are happening locally in Peoria.
Beauty Events in Peoria
Each spring, the Easterseals Ladies Auxiliary presents a fashion show fundraiser, a local tradition that’s been going on for more than 60 years. The entire local beauty community is involved, including hairstylists, designers, makeup artists, local shops, and boutiques.
Other fashion shows occur throughout the year. Look for beauty-focused events, such as an urban streetwear show at the Peoria Art Guild or the Designer Fashion Show Peoria.
