Beauty Events of Normal, IL

In Normal, IL, and its sister city of Bloomington, IL, the culture of beauty is strong. Each fall, the Miss Illinois USA Pageant comes to Bloomington to crown the Miss Illinois Teen USA and Miss Illinois USA. Attend the competition to see the hair and makeup styles of these beauty contestants.

To see the latest trends in special-event hair and makeup, attend the #Wedding Bloomington Bridal Show in November or the Elegant Bridal Expo in January. For a fashion show with a different flair, check out the multi-day steampunk festival, Cogs & Corsets. Held in downtown Bloomington, the schedule of events includes a runway show, costume contest, and even a steampunk drag show.

Hair and makeup students who are interested in theatrical applications can create new stage styles by volunteering with a theatre company such as Community Players Theatre or Heartland Theatre Company. For example, theatre makeup artists created spooky looks for a local production of The Addams Family.

Beauty History of Normal, IL

In 1968, a husband and wife duo opened up a salon and barbershop in the Bloomington-Normal area. After 50 years of haircuts and hairstyles, Hairport closed its doors after having cut the hair of the Twin Cities’ biggest movers and shakers.

National news took note of an unlikely makeup trend that was prompted by a Midwestern winter: frosted eyelash tips. Normal, IL, resident Isabella Raymundo said that when polar vortex temperatures froze her eyelashes, her makeup style was like Elsa from Frozen. In 2019, Illinois lawmakers made a bold statement by only allowing cruelty-free cosmetics. It’s the third state in the country to do so.
