Esthetician license renewal works differently in every state, and the differences are larger than most licensees expect. Illinois runs a two-year cycle with 10 continuing education hours. Indiana requires no continuing education at all. Wisconsin dropped its requirement in 2017. What all three share is a fixed statewide deadline, which means your renewal date has nothing to do with when you were licensed.
How to Renew Your Esthetician License
The sequence is the same in each state, and the order matters. Continuing education has to be finished before you file, not alongside it.
- Confirm your expiration date. Renewal dates are set by statute, not by your license anniversary. Look yours up through your state agency rather than assuming.
- Complete required continuing education first. Illinois requires hours from an approved sponsor within the two years before expiration. Indiana and Wisconsin require none.
- Keep your completion certificates. Illinois runs random audits and the burden of proof sits with you, not the provider.
- File through the state portal. Illinois uses the IDFPR online renewal system, Indiana uses MyLicense, and Wisconsin uses the DSPS portal.
- Pay the renewal fee. Fees are modest in all three states, and late penalties are not.
Renewal windows open in advance. Illinois lets you renew in the period before expiration, and Wisconsin and Indiana both notify licensees ahead of the deadline. Filing early costs nothing and protects you from a portal that closes the moment your license lapses.
Knowing how to renew esthetician license credentials matters most in the weeks before the deadline, when the continuing education requirement becomes the constraint rather than the paperwork. Approved courses fill up in the months preceding a statewide renewal date, because every licensee in the state is working toward the same deadline rather than staggered anniversaries. Booking continuing education six months out is the single change that removes most of the pressure from the process.

Wisconsin licenses this work as an Aesthetician rather than an Esthetician, and its renewal date is set in Wis. Stat. section 440.08(2). Wisconsin eliminated mandatory continuing education under 2017 Act 81, replacing it with an attestation that you have reviewed the statutory digest DSPS sends to licensees. Esthetician Continuing Education That Counts
Only Illinois requires it, and the requirement is more specific than a raw hour count suggests. Per the IDFPR continuing education fact sheet, estheticians complete 1 hour of sexual harassment prevention training plus 9 hours in approved subject areas each cycle.
Approved subject areas are defined, and courses outside them may be rejected:
- Advanced product chemistry and chemical interaction
- The use of machines and implements
- Sanitary procedures, hazardous chemicals, and exposure minimization
- Advanced anatomy of the skin, scalp, hair, or nails
- Human relations and communication skills
- Management and marketing
Three rules catch people out. Profession-specific continuing education is waived for your first renewal after initial licensure, though the sexual harassment course is not. Your first renewal must include an hour of domestic violence and sexual assault awareness education; later renewals may include it. And the provider has to be a sponsor registered with the Division, because an unapproved course earns nothing regardless of how relevant the content is.
On format, the current IDFPR fact sheet allows a licensee to earn the full requirement through in-person courses, online individual study courses, or a mix. Online courses must include an examination and a means of verifying completion. Older guidance capping online hours still circulates on provider sites, so check the current fact sheet rather than a course seller.
If Your License Has Already Expired
Practicing on an expired license is unlicensed practice, and none of the three states offers a grace period that lets you keep working while you sort it out.
In Illinois, missing the window means the online portal will not take your renewal and you must request a reinstatement application from IDFPR. Continuing education cannot be waived when restoring a license from an inactive or expired status, even though waivers exist for ordinary renewals. In Indiana, a license expired beyond three years requires a reinstatement fee and board-determined remediation, and at five years the written exam comes back. Wisconsin also requires re-examination once a license has been expired for five years or more.
The pattern across all three is the same. Short lapses cost money, long lapses cost you the exam.
Renewing More Than One License
Dual licensees get one piece of good news. Illinois allows continuing education appropriate to more than one profession to count for both without duplication, so a sanitation course taken by someone holding cosmetology and esthetician licenses satisfies part of each requirement. The hour totals still differ: cosmetologists complete 14 hours where estheticians complete 10, so overlap reduces the work without eliminating it. Waivers and Hardship
Illinois allows a licensee to request a waiver of continuing education when circumstances genuinely prevented completion. Recognized grounds include full-time military service during a substantial part of the renewal period, an incapacitating illness documented by a physician, caring for an ill or disabled family member, financial hardship, or living where CE opportunities are not reasonably available. You file the request with your renewal application and fee, and the license renews pending review, which is not the same as approval. Waivers apply to one renewal period only.
