BEAUTY HISTORY OF CHICAGO

From 1945 to 2017, Chicago was the home to Ebony Magazine and its sister publication Jet, centerpieces of black style, culture, and beauty. Magazine images showed everything from beauty parlors to barber shops, and articles covered topics such as cosmetic entrepreneurs.

In the 1960s, the beehive hairstyle was developed by Chicago-based hairstylist Margaret Vinci Heldt. The style has crossed genres and decades, having been worn by Aretha Franklin, Amy Winehouse, Adele, Marge Simpson, Jackie Onassis, and so many more.

Today, Chicago’s style is a hotbed for streetwear culture. The scene is defined by local designers Virgil Abloh and Kanye West, as well as local brands Fat Tiger and Chicago Native. Plus, brands such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus have debuted their streetwear collections in Chicago.
