We are here to make people
feel good about themselves.
We really have to feel like we
are a day maker for the guest.
You’ve made my day.
How great is that when you hear
those words from your guest.
Hi, welcome to the Daymaker podcast.
Today I’m really excited because
we have Jen Tassonic here from
Dermalogica and we’re going to talk
about all all things skin care.
So Jen, I love Dermalogica,
big fan of Dermalogica.
So tell me right now, what
are the latest innovations
that Dermalogica has?
All right, so first I would like
to talk about the pro pen.
The pro pen is our newest
device that is going
to have four different tips.
So it’s going to be infusing
serums into the skin.
We have a silicon tip, a metal
tip, a 27 pin needle tip,
and a 9 pin needle tip.
So what’s fantastic about this device
is that you don’t have to buy
a different pen for each service.
You can just switch out the tips.
Super popular as far as infusing
our pro serums, but most
recently infusing retinol.
It’s absolutely fantastic.
It’s very similar result
of microneedling but without
the bleeding or any type of
irritation or long term discomfort.
What are the other products
that you use with that?
You can use any of our pro serums.
We have a pro vitamin C,
niacinamide, hyaluronic acid
and then just a brightening
with the pro power ipl.
Sometimes I like to compare it
to if we went and had highlights
or something done with our
hair and you get in the car
and you still see the grays.
A lot of times with a facial or
a skin service, as we get
older, you can kind of see that
aging and that just kind
of the grittiness of your skin.
Whereas the power I peel is going
to have grape juice extract,
it’s going to have some other
vitamins and minerals that are
just going to help really smooth
everything out to kind of give
you that polished finished skin
treatment.
And it’s very popular.
It is.
I love it.
You know, it’s nothing better
than coming home from a stressful
day and putting those on,
just relaxing for the night.
Yeah, you know, it does give
a really great result.
So Dermalogic is always, you know,
next level with their skincare.
They have great performance
ingredients, things like that.
Talk to me a little bit about
the multivitamin power recovery
serum because I know that this
is really a strong product.
Now they rebranded a formulation,
renamed this
for the stabilizing repair cream.
I think that, you know, I’m
always impressed with what
they do with the line.
So tell me.
So people that are the OGs of
Dermalogica that have been with us
forever know everything there is to
know about the multivitamin family.
So.
So essentially we haven’t come out
with new products within
the multivitamin family
in probably 10 or 15 years.
So this is going to be our newest
part and this is going to be our
multivitamin power recovery cream.
Essentially what it’s going
to have is the vitamins A, C and E.
And it’s meant to immediately cure
that, like, stressed aging skin.
That’s just kind of where
you’re like, I need that glow.
I need to feel my best.
So we just came out with this as well
as the serum, I will say as well.
The texture on this is fantastic.
It is so, so rich and so thick
that it’s just like you put it
on and it feels like your
skin really took a drink.
And I say, even for me, I don’t
necessarily would want to use
something that rich and thick
every day, but I love having it
in my arsenal for those days
where I just really need a little
something extra.
And then also
the stabilizing repair cream.
This is hands down one of my favorite
products we’ve ever created.
As far as ingredients go, this
is big with peptides, ceramides,
all these really fantastic things
to help with anti aging.
So the stabilizing repair was also
just awarded by the Eczema
foundation as a safe treatment
for eczema for even down to babies.
Absolutely obsessed with it.
Yeah.
It’s also great for sunburn, mosquito
bites, any type of irritation.
I love it.
And you know, we’ve been fortunate
because we brought on the nano
infusion probably a year ago
and our students have really
taken charge with that too.
You know, we offer, we
train everyone on it.
They have the option to be able
to purchase the PIN at a special
student discount and so really
sets them up for success.
How do you see the skincare,
the demand for those skincare
students increasing
over the next 10 years?
I would say as far as the beauty
industry goes, it’s starting to
be like everything as far as
social media and phones and all
these things where we want that
instant result and that instant
gratification and we want to
see, see what we’re paying for
immediately.
And I feel like on a student
basis, you guys teaching that
immediate result at the school
level is so fantastic because
they’re going into their futures
knowing that they have their
standard facial down, they have
it perfect.
But if they want to have those
advanced high level, high ticket as
well services, it’s just such a
fantastic option to be able to offer
all the different types of services
with one device in addition to
advanced education.
So with the Penn, anytime we
launch a new protocol or a new
service or anything of that
nature, obviously with Dermalogica
they have that advanced education
education postgraduate.
It’s just so important, and I always
explain to students that’s going to
be the key piece to being
successful is staying with the
trends, staying with the industry
and giving yourself that advanced
education to always be that leader
in the industry instead of just
kind of falling back and letting
everyone run past you, which we
talk about at our visits.
And the pen is like I said,
just constantly, always coming out
with new innovations.
It’s truly such an amazing device.
Really.
One of the things that we
appreciate about Dermalogica is
the fact that we partner so well
together with that advanced
education, even if the students
don’t necessarily make it to the
institute, which they do quite a
bit for, for field trips.
But even if they can’t make it
because of distance or whatever
else, you guys are in our schools
teaching this, you know, and one
thing I appreciate too is we do
the Dermalogica student exercise
every quarter too, which helps
them learn how to be able to
educate their clients on the
different product lines.
So that way it supports,
you know, the, what they’re
doing between visits.
You know, it’s sort of like
equating it to going to the dentist.
You know, you go to dentist
every six months, but you
doesn’t mean you don’t brush
your teeth in the meantime.
So if they’re coming in, their
clients are getting these
services, it’s incredibly
important for them to educate
them on what they need to do in
between the visits to be able to
continue that result.
So tell me how you feel like it
benefits our students
with our relationship and education
where dermalogic is concerned?
Sure.
So when I personally do classes
at campuses, as you know, I do a lot
of classes within the campuses.
I’m always teaching them.
That education piece is
the most important part.
I’m always explaining to
the students, you’re never selling
product, you’re educating the client
on how to have their best skin.
So as I always explain, it kind
of starts to snowball where
you sell them one product or
you educate them on a product.
And because you had the education
and you were able to provide that
education, it’s building that
brand loyalty, it’s building that
trust to where then they’re going
to continue to book with you
because you gave them the right
product for their skin as well as
touching it and touching the
client, making sure that they
know how to use it when they get
home, when to use it.
And I always say to students,
next thing you know, because
you educated them on what was
needed at home, they’re now
trusting you with their mom or
their sister or their grandma.
And it just keeps building
and building that relationship.
So I always, always teach them
it’s never about making a sale, it’s
about building that trust.
And the education standpoint is
the most important piece to that.
I agree.
I never think I’ve ever
sold to a client.
And let’s be real,
Estee is my first love.
You know, that was the first
license I got back in the mid-90s.
It’s still one of my first loves.
I really grew my brand
by focusing on skin care.
So I appreciate that.
But tell me what you feel is unique
about our partnership as compared
to another non partner type school.
Well, I definitely will say
the relationship specifically that
I have with you guys, that
you guys are always so open
to my feedback and my advice.
It’s almost like again, we have a
trusting relationship that I feel as
though, as far as Dermalogica goes,
you guys are very deeply embedded
into the brand as well as I love
that you guys have your Dermalogica
ambassador.
So if I do need something
at a specific campus, I know exactly
who to reach out to and speak to.
But I always say Tricoci.
Just the way you have
the relationships with your brands
and the way everything is
just run and it’s all very
uniform and standard.
It’s always a good feeling to be
at a Tricoci school because
I just know what to expect.
It’s never going to be like,
oh, I don’t know what’s
going on with food today.
It’s always very standard
and it’s always a good experience.
I’ve joked with you before and said
sometimes I get in the car
after a school visit and I
have that same feeling in my
chest as like a sales high.
Even though it’s more of just
a communication, hanging out with
students high, you know what I mean?
Of just that good friendly feeling.
It’s fun.
Students are really fun because
they’re still kind of new in their
career where they enjoy those aha
moments and things like that.
So can you tell me, as, as
the student graduates, what advice
would you give to new
Esthetician students who’s getting
their license or even Dow.
A lot of our cast students
focus on skincare too.
What kind of advice would
you give them to help them
build their business?
I always say, obviously, social
media, it’s really important
to always have really good photos,
really good before and after.
But the number one thing is
always going to be education.
Whether it’s through postgraduate
education, whether it’s taking
classes with us, just always
staying current in the industry.
It truly is every client that
I have post grad that is
successful, it’s the same story
over and over and over.
They always stay up to date with
education and the upcoming trends.
Well, you guys make it
easy with education.
You know, we have our own
digital platform that all
the students pull from.
And you guys are really great
about helping us support that
and loading information into it
and then if something changes,
being able to get that altered.
You work with Lauren and our
team very well there.
So I appreciate that.
So this is the Day Maker podcast.
So one things I’d like to ask is,
you know, tell me
a time when you realized that
you made someone’s day.
I joke and say that it’s every day,
but I think we do, dude, we do.
I would say most recently,
I did an event locally in Illinois
and it was a chemical peel class.
And it was a lot of people that
just truly, truly wanted to get
their feet wet with chemical peels.
And we ended up doing a bunch
of models and a bunch of
just kind of showing them.
This is.
This isn’t anything to be afraid of.
This is a great service.
And just seeing, like, the pure joy
in their faces of, like handing them
the mirrors and, you know, me still
kind of getting my feet wet with
services, it was just really good.
And then also too, the
estheticians that were there were
fresh out of school, they were
young and just being able to show
them, like, it’s this easy to
truly change someone’s skin,
which makes their day.
So I would say that was one that
I had that was really impactful
in the last couple weeks.
Yeah, I think, I think that’s a
good point because I don’t know if
you remember, but the way we got
the nano pen at our company was
because you worked on a member of
my team.
And we did half his face.
We did the left side, and you
left the right side undone.
Just the visible results
on the left side were amazing.
And then of course, you
did the right side.
And then for the next three days.
This is a total dude who doesn’t
do anything with his skin.
I made him sit in the chair
kind of forcefully.
We all were.
And for three days, all he could say
is, you know, I never bought into
this whole skincare hype, but I love
it because every time I walk by a
mirror, I just look at my skin, you
know?
So I think that that’s incredible.
But tell me, when you make them feel
like that, how do you think that
translates then to what they provide
to their guests in their chair?
I think just what I always tell
students or clients is if you
have that genuine feeling in
your heart like for the brand,
that’s when you’re going to be
successful, because then you’re
putting that passion into every
single client.
And that’s truly how I feel
with Dermalogica.
In fact, I even joke with students
and say, if Dermalogica doesn’t
make you feel that way, then find
something that does because you’re
never going to be happy, truly.
And I think, I know this sounds
so cliche, but if you
truly love what you do,
you’re putting that into everyone.
And I always say, people will always
say, jen, like, what’s your zodiac?
Or what’s da da da?
Because I’m always so silly.
And I’m like, the funny thing is I
just really love my job this much.
And I’m like, you guys
will be surprised.
I will get in my car and listen
to crime podcasts the whole
way home and not say one word.
But I love my job so much that
it just naturally flows.
So I always tell clients
and students, find what naturally
flows for you because
it truly is not working.
Then you’re just happy.
I think that’s a common trend we
hear over and over on this podcast,
is, you know, enjoying what we
do, you know, and that’s huge.
So how does that contribute to
this student, once they
become licensed, having that
long term client retention?
Ooh, that’s a good one.
Again, I always say you have to find
something that makes you passionate.
But I also think that’s what’s so
great about this industry, is that
it’s constantly evolving, it’s
constantly changing, changing.
New things are always
coming out, new services.
So I think obviously you went
to school for aesthetics, so you’re
passionate about it, but just keep
finding or keep taking new
classes on the newest things.
If something’s making you,
you know, you’re getting
tired of doing the same thing,
trying something new.
Or I always tell people as well, even
though it’s hard sometimes to get
down to the institute, if I ever
feel like I’m in a rut in my career.
I will take a class like in another
state or I’ll go down to the
institute and I always say it’s
like my Carrie Bread Shaw moment
even though it’s Chicago and not
New York but just like walking
through the city and it’s windy and
just kind of it just reinvigorates
my soul of the industry makes me
feel like fresh again just to find
little things like that that just
are going to fill your cup and
having just a really good work life
balance because you can’t keep that
passion going if you’re not filling
your own cup with things that make
you passionate as well.
I love that and I love you and Erin
and the whole team at Dermalogica.
I appreciate everything you guys do.
You guys make my day on a regular
basis so I appreciate you too.
And your skin looks
fabulous by the way.
This is the best it’s ever looked.
Oh thanks.
