On November 8th, Mr. David Gargano provided a demo at the Chicago Northeast campus explaining the different types of shears and scissors that are available. Within the discussion, I learned that there are several types of shears that cater to multiple hand positions which include the swivel, double swivel, three rings, two rings, one-half rings and more. There are also several different steel types available and knowing the difference between the various blades will help you meet the requirements for the different types of cuts – whether your cut consists of slide, dry, precision, thinning or texturizing, you will be able to achieve the desired look. You will find that choosing the right shear with the right fit will not only save you money but it will also help to prevent carpal tunnel. Another important factor to remember is proper shear handling and proper maintenance. Proper shear handling helps to avoid abrasions and any premature needs for repairs. For example never lay your shears on a bare surface always make sure there’s something between your shears and the surface you are laying them on. Proper maintenance will be keeping your blades free of moisture and oxidizing solutions. Make sure to keep the blades dry and clean at all times, never leave any chemicals or water on them. If at any point you feel like you need a repair service performed on your shears make sure you research the business or person doing the repairs first.

In conclusion just remember when you are shopping for shears, don’t be afraid to ask questions. Ask who made them, what kind of steel they were made with and where the steel came from. After the presentation with David Gargano, I feel more confident going to purchase shears and using them on different cuts.
