Tricoci University of Beauty Culture in Glendale Height’s students get excited about a lot of events on campus, but none are quite so captivating as the Prom Creative Demo. Hosted on an annual basis, the demo invites stylists from ten of Tricoci University’s campuses to come and compete to see who can bring about the most striking innovations to the genre of prom makeup and hairstyling.

March 21, 2013, saw students from Tricoci University go to work for two-and-a-half hours to transform visiting models into a high schooler’s prom dream. Students were invited to participate in one of five categories:

  • Full down do
  • Full updo
  • Half up half down do
  • Avant-garde
  • Short hair styling

Starting the Evening

No student comes into the Prom Demo event on their own. Instead, Tricoci University students are matched in groups of two or three prior to the demo taking place. These students are plucked from all of Tricoci University’s programs, meaning each model will be left to the whims of cosmetology students and esthetic students alike. These students all have the chance to brainstorm their prom king or queen looks prior to the competition. Then, when the games are about to begin, they can pick their models and go to work, displaying their techniques for visiting students, professors and industry professionals alike.

Two-and-a-half hours is not a lot of time to pull together a look for prom, but students are not given an impossible challenge. Instead, the 2013 event saw students take advantage of a wide variety of accessories, ranging from traditional flowers to eggs. The demo is, at its heart, an opportunity for students to experiment with some of their stranger design concepts, even as the constraints of the competition encourage them to keep traditional beauty standards at the heart of their looks.

The Demo’s Ambitions

The annual Tricoci University prom demo is both an opportunity for students to put their skills to the test and a chance for the university to recruit. Potential Tricoci University students are invited to the expo and encouraged to watch different makeup artists and hairstylists work within a limited time period to create stunning looks. At the end of the night, potential students are encouraged to seek out Tricoci University representatives and learn more about the university’s admissions process.

That’s not to say that attending students don’t get anything out of the demo—quite the opposite, in fact. Students whose hairstyling and makeup win them the evening receive Starbucks gift cards and the opportunity to laud their winnings on resumes and in job interviews for years to come.

In short, the Prom Demo at Tricoci University is a community-unifying event. If you’re in the area of a Tricoci University campus come March, why not stop by and see what students are learning on campus today and what lessons you might be able to pick up, should you start attending local classes.
